WHAC Newsletter 24th April 2024

In this week’s newsletter:

First Up

A quiet week in Newsletterland, but we have reports from the Christchurch Marathon and the Aussie champs, and this weekend sees the first interclub race of the harrier season with the equestrianesque Shaw Baton Relays at Battle Hill. If you have anything for the WHAC newsletter, make sure it reaches me at kneel@wcc.govt.nz by 3pm Thursday afternoon. Except this week because it’s Anzac Day

Christchurch Marathon
Mark Te Punga with A.N. Other
Last Sunday was a blue ribbon day for those Whacletes who headed south for the 2024 Christchurch Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10km (which was actually 10.5km???)
Jamie Duncan was the first blue vest across the finish line for second place in the M40s 10km event – only 3 seconds behind first. Jamie said he went through the 10km in 33.20 and 35.33 (net) across the line for 10th overall.
Then came one of the most inspirational results I have ever seen – Esther George’s comeback event after her horrendous accident last year when she was hit by a car on a morning run. Her 1.24.36 net time saw her 4th open woman across the line. To see Esther smiling as she did the 10km walk was something I will never forget.
Moving up to the half-marathon, which doubled as the national champs, Nathan Tse lowered his PB to a sizzling 66.37 – and 5th place in a high class field, and only 2 minutes behind Michael Voss’ winning time of 64.28.
John Stewart was the next to get a PB in the half, recording 74.00 (net). That was over a minute quicker than his old best time.
Then in a run for the ages (not aged), Paul Hewitson set a new national age group record for M60s of an amazing 77.41 (net) or 77.46 (gun). That was over 90 seconds under the old record! Ironically that was one of the few non-PBs by WHAC runners on the day.

Graeme Morrison came home in a PB of 79.42 (net) for silver in the M50s. Graeme said that was to the second the same time he recorded as a 17 year old!
And yet more silver (and gold) ware followed. Nat Hardaker won silver in the W40s with an impressive 1.27.05 (net). And Charlotte Kerr went one better getting gold in the W50s in 1.27.45 (net).
Harrison Cooper kept the PBs coming with a 1.29.36 (net) – his first time under 90 mins.
And wait, there’s more…. In the full marathon Kumiko Otani got bronze in her marathon debut. Her 2.57.59 (net) was also the quickest time in the W20-39 division. Alas there is no photo of her having to be lifted onto the podium after cramp set in on the step up.
And completing the list of PBs, Mark Schomaker broke 3 hours for the first time in 2.58.17 (net).
A brilliant day for WHAC. Who wants to be part of the 2025 trip south?

Charlotte Kerr became the national half marathon champion in the MW50-59 age grade when registering a new PB of 1.27.45 and showing great pace judgement throughout. Charlotte ran second in the national road championship in Palmerston North last year behind clubmate Vickie Humphries.

Nat Hardaker clocked a big new PB of 1.27.05 (cutting over four minutes off her previous best in the process) and like her team-mate and training partner, produced a terrific piece of even-paced running throughout. National was also second in the national road champs last year.
The most courageous effort of the day belonged to WHAC’s Esther George, a previous winner of the Reboot Half Marathon in the Garden City, who returned to this year’s event as a 10K walker as she continues her comeback from horrendous injuries sustained when she was run down by a car on a pedestrian crossing in Lower Hutt last year, shortly after competing in the NZRR. Esther made a great fist of her walk debut by finishing 6th women overall in a field of 151 and 4th in her age grade. Her effort on Saturday was a testament to her all-round courage and determination to eventually rehab to run again at some stage in the future.
Australian Athletics Championships, Adelaide
Well done to WHAC’s Poppy Healy, running in last weekend’s Australian Athletics Champs.
Competing in the Under 18 Grade Poppy finished 5th in the 800m final in 2:10.27 (PB).
Poppy also competed in the 400m just missing out on a spot in the final by 0.2 running a 57.62 PB
She also anchored the 4 x 400 team for 7th place.

Faultline Ultra 100-miler – Will Bell

Race photos are in! This one taken at 100km on Skyline Walkway (one of my favourite places) just after having dinner (one of my favourite meals 😂) with my crew (some of my favourite people). I’m all smiles with a full heart, a full tummy, and a full race vest, ready to face the final 60km.
