WHAC Newsletter 20th June 2024

In this week’s initialistic newsletter:

Just a reminder that the Honest 10 next month will be on 14th July rather than the traditional third Sunday in the month. This is because of Bastille Day. Or not. Either way you know you want to. Alors!

Barnes Cross Country

WHAC member, Finbar Chesney, recently competed in the Barnes Cross Country in Dunedin.
This event was a 5km handicapped race held at Kettle Park in Saint Clair. The race honours the memory of Sir James Barnes, who won the New Zealand senior men’s cross-country title in 1932 and the mile in 1933, and who was the Mayor of Dunedin for three terms from 1968 to 1977.
In an open field of nearly 60 participants, Finbar was 24th across the line in 32:23. His elapsed time of 17:53 was the 5th fastest of the day. The Chesney’s have a good record on this course with Liam taking out the fastest time at last year’s event in 16:32.

New Zealand Champs

Please take a look at the attached info sheet if you wish to be considered for selection for the Wellington team to the NZ XC Champs at Hawkes Bay on the weekend of 3-4 August and/or the National 10km Road Champs in Timaru on 26 October.  Initial selections for the XC champs will be made following the Dorne Cup. The balance of the team will be announced following the Wellington XC Champs on 21 July. Hewi has already booked accommodation, if you wish to co-ordinate.

Athletics Wellington will select athletes to represent the Centre at the:
A. Athletics NZ Cross Country Championships, at Napier on Saturday 3 August 2024
B. Athletics NZ 10km Road Championships at Timaru on Sunday 26 October 2024
The key objectives are:
1. To send competitive Athletics Wellington teams in all grades to these events, where possible.
2. To enable this, in general individual athletes will be selected foremostly on the basis that they show ability to finish in the predicted top half of the field for their event.
3. When appropriate to enable a top team to finish, some additional athletes may be selected to ensure there is a competitive scoring team.
4. Individuals will be selected on merit even when no team is likely based on clause 2 (above).

Selections will be made in the following grades (these being the grades for which Athletics NZ hold a Team Race at the Championships): Men, Women, Men Under 20, Women Under 20, Masters Men M35+, Masters Men M50+, Masters Men 65+, Masters Women W35+ and Masters Women W50+ and Masters Women 65+. Selections will only be made in the Men Under 18 and Women Under 18 grades for the NZ Cross Country Championships (as there is no Team Race for these grades at the NZ Road Championships).

Expression of Intention: Athletes wishing to be considered for selection must notify the Selectors of the events they wish to be considered for at least two days prior to the relevant selection date, by completing both:
✓ the online Expression of Interest [EOI] to notify your intention to be selected, and
✓ the Athletics Wellington Athlete Team Agreement.
If an athlete subsequently becomes unavailable, the athlete must notify the Selectors immediately. No athlete will be considered for selection if they are not recorded on the ANZ membership database as a current member of an Athletics Wellington club.

Selections will be made for the following events on the following dates:
➢ NZ Cross Country: Initial selections of up to 4 in each grade announced following the Dorne Cup on 8 June 2024 (based on athletes demonstrating the ability to comfortably finish in the top half of their race at the NZ Cross Country based on performances in winter interclub competitions in 2024) • Following the Athletics Wellington Cross Country Championships on 21 July 2024, the balance of the selections will be announced.
• Athletes initially selected after the Dorne Cup are expected to demonstrate fitness by racing in the Wellington Cross Country Championships.
➢ NZ Road: • Following the Athletics Wellington 10km Road Championships on 7 September 2024, the selections will be announced.
• To be selected for the Athletics Wellington team there is an expectation that athletes compete in either the AW 5km or 10km Road Championships. To gain an exemption from this athlete should write to the Out of Stadi Selection Convenor prior to the 7 September event.
If a selected athlete withdraws from the team, the selectors may replace that athlete at any time.

General Athlete Details: On advice of selection in the team, the athlete must let the Athletics Wellington General Manager or Team Manager know their uniform requirements and travel and accommodation plans. Online forms will be set up for these requirements.
Team Uniform and Hoodie: Selected athletes will be able to purchase an Athletics Wellington team singlet and hoodie. These are only available for purchase to those named in Athletics Wellington teams for these events. An online form will be set up for this.
Subsidies: Athletes selected for the NZ Cross Country and NZ Road Championships will receive reimbursement (via their club) of their entry fees. An accommodation subsidy of $50 per Championship will be given to each athlete selected. Payment of subsidies is conditional on completing the race.
