First Up
It seems the season has gotten underway with a bang, with the club opening day last Saturday and lots of other events happening over the same weekend.
There was the Christchurch Marathon, the North Island Secondary School Champs in Hamilton, the Great Forest runs at Waitarere Beach and the Wellington Mountain Running Champs in Wainuiomata. Each of the races included a good representation from WHAC, with plenty of great results as well.
Don’t forget that this Sunday is the April edition of the Honest 10K, with an 8:30 a.m. race start from the Whale Tail sculpture near Freyberg Pool. The following weekend is the Donaldson Memorial relay, a fun club event, followed on May 1 by the first interclub race, the Shaw Baton Relay.
What a difference from a year ago, when we were all in lockdown at this time with no events on the horizon. I guess the lesson is to enjoy it while we can!

Congratulations to everybody who competed on Sunday in the Christchurch Marathon, which also doubled as the New Zealand Marathon Champs. Nathan Tse had an outstanding run to finish 5th overall in 2:32, while Steve Gawn also had a great run to finish 2nd M50 in 2:56.
There were some fantastic results in the women’s half marathon. Esther George was 4th overall (1:20); Sarah Riceman 6th (1:25); Miranda Spencer 12th (1:29); and Nat Hardaker 22nd (1:34).
In the men’s half, Paul Hewitson proved that age is no barrier to running ridiculously fast, finishing 2nd M50 in 1:19.

Great Forest Events
It was the 25th and final Great Forest run last weekend. The well-organized event included several distances run over forest roads and pine-needle covered tracks near Waitarere Beach north of Levin. Unfortunately, the organizers have decided not to continue. The event has been well-supported by WHAC in the past and there was another good turnout on the final day.
Isaac Murphy finished third overall in the Half Marathon in 1:17. Age-group winners in the half included James Waite M45 (1:23); Nick Perry M50 (1:27); Vickie Humphries F55 (1:34); Peter Corbett M65 (1:53). Congratulations also to Brendon Flanagan who completed the full marathon, finishing 7th M40 (5:02).
