First Up

Quiz night in Miramar on Sunday quickly sorted out the amateurs from the serious trivia buffs, aided by an entertaining host with a knack for impersonations. At one point, Geoff Henry chimed in with the timely answer of “defoliant” although it wasn’t enough to save the slide of his team. It was a good turnout, with the funds helping to get Kirstie Rae and Maali Kyle-Ford to the Australian Cross Country Champs in Wollongong on August 24.

Good luck to everybody competing in the Bays Relay on Saturday, and please stay safe on the sections without a footpath by hugging tight to the side of the road.

Angela Leck

Leck To Compete In Blue

From Steve Plowman

New WHAC member Angela Leck, who competes in the MW35+ division, will run in the blue singlet for the first time at the Wellington Road Champs at Wainuiomata on Aug. 24.

She continues to cut a swathe through the Nelson running scene in her comeback to running in New Zealand. The former NZ rep at the 2015 World Mountain Running Champs in Wales returned to New Zealand late last year after living in Wales and then Australia after the World Champs. Those with slightly longer memories will recall Angela as a former Wellington road champion and runner-up to World Mountain Running Champion Melissa Moon in the 2013 Vosseler Shield, and still the only women to be the overall winner of the Three Peaks series from the men.

She had her first race back after a lengthy break in the Great Taste Trail Race (10K) from Mapua to Kaiterteri in May, winning in impressive fashion. She then scored another strong win in a Wallace Shield XC series (5K) race as a lead-up to the 26 km Captain Cook’s Landing trail race. She won that in 2.13 to finish 6th overall among the men, and won the women’s race by an outstanding 10 minutes and 54 seconds. Two weeks ago, Angela won Athletic Nelson’s President’s Cup (6k cross-country) in 23.44 – men’s winner Brian Kemp ran 23.14.

Last week Angela made it five wins from five races back when she won the gruelling Dovedale Hill Climb (11.2 kms), a time-honoured Nelson race, which attracts some of the south’s best runners. Again Angela proved herself the nemesis of the men, keeping them more than honest with her 6th overall as she ran away with the Open Women’s race by 10 minutes and 43 seconds – running the trip in 49.17 – one of the fastest times since the course record was set in 2011. Her next major race in the south is The Dun Run, a 26 km mountain run.

Time To Order Your Hoodies

From Bertram Manz

We are planning to place another order for hoodies. Prices still need to be confirmed, but are likely to stay similar to previous orders.
Children’s sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 – about $50 each (add an additional $8 if you want your name printed on the back). Please note that the children’s sizes do not have a draw cord (it’s a health and safety thing).

Adults’ sizes: Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, 2XL, 3XL – about $55 each (add an additional $8 if you want your name printed at the back). Note that they are a large fit so consider getting a size smaller if you prefer it fitting, or if unsure try one of the many that are walking around! If interested, please email your details to Bertram Manz: membership@whac.org.nz

Club AGM

The club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at the clubrooms from 7:00 p.m. on Monday, 19 August. It would be great to see a good representation of club members across the different ages and stages. Come along with your support and your suggestions.

Become An Official

From Athletics Wellington

There is a lot a fun and satisfaction in being an official at athletics meets. It is great seeing athletes in action up close, and satisfying to know that you have helped to ensure that the competition is held in accordance with best practice.

We need new officials to help supplement our existing numbers. In particular, we need additional officials for the NZSSAA championships that are being held at Newtown Park on 6-8 December.  To help develop new officials, we have scheduled four training seminars in August and September. The training dates are:

28 August
4 September
11 September
18 September

These training sessions are suitable for all-comers. You don’t need extensive prior experience or knowledge.Details of the training seminars, including dates, topics, venues and contact details are published on our website here:
