First up …

Congratulations to the Senior Women, Junior Men and M60 teams who all won their races at this year’s Bays Relay.

And talking of relays, it’s that time of year to start planning for National Road Relays, which is on Oct. 6. Don’t forget to book your plane tickets for Christchurch. The cost this year, excluding plane tickets, is $180. That covers van hire, fuel, entry fees, accommodation for two nights, and one evening dinner. The cost is discounted by grants and funds collected from events like the Honest 10.

Please send me details of any results, upcoming events, or ideas for future newsletters (email Nick Perry: nickgbperry@gmail.com).

Come Along To The AGM

From Vickie Humphries

What? Club AGM

When? 7 p.m. Monday Aug. 20.

Where? WHAC clubrooms

Please come along to the annual general meeting next Monday night. It would be great to see a good representation of club members across the different ages and stages. Come along with your support and your suggestions. Attending does not commit you to anything, rather it shows your commitment to a good club being even better going forward.
The Annual Report is available now here

Join The Club Board

From Doug Hancock

A number of long-term board members will be standing down at the club’s AGM. We therefore have vacancies in the position of treasurer, club secretary and in the non-board role of grants officer.

The club relies on volunteers and without these key roles filled, the club will struggle to function or will have to try to contract out services at enormous expense, resulting in hefty rises in membership fees. We therefore are desperate for new volunteers to assist on the board in any of these roles. You will be well supported. Please consider helping the club this year.

If you have any questions, please get in contact with the club Chairperson Doug Hancock (doug.hancock22@gmail.com, 027-322-4206).

Wellington Road Champs

A reminder the Wellington Road Champs are being held on Saturday Aug. 18 at the Wainuiomata Recreation Area. In the words of Mark Te Punga: “It would be great to see a big blue wave on the start line of every event at the road champs”. For more details go here

Don’t forget to bring your personalised race bib for this event. If you have not yet picked up your race bib, you can obtain one as follows:

If you registered before 7th July, contact your WHAC section leader (details found at the foot of this newsletter) to make arrangements to obtain your personalised bib from her/him.

If you registered after that date, on Saturday you can obtain a temporary bib (which must be returned after the race) from the Wainuiomata club tent near the start/finish line on Reservoir Road (Wainui are the organising club for AW road champs).

Honest 10

This month’s edition of the Honest 10 is on Sunday, Aug. 19, for those who have any energy left after the Road Champs. Meet outside Freyberg Pool in Oriental Bay. Registrations from 8:20 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.

Friday Lunch Runs

For those who work or play in the city and are looking for a social Friday lunch run, there are a couple of options:

12:30 p.m. Frunchtime. Meets at Fergs Kayaks on the waterfront. Organised by the Wellington Running Meetup Group. A run around the trails of Mt. Vic, about 6-7 k.m. Pace is moderate and accomodates different ability levels.

12:30 p.m. A group of runners, most of them from Scottish but with a couple from WHAC, meet at the Kupe Statue to do the Maidavale loop, which is about 7 k.m. Pace is about 4:15 – 4:30 per km.

Neon Night Walk And Run

This a new event on Oct. 27 in Porirua that is raising money for charity. The organisers say:

This is your chance to do good, have fun, get fit, challenge yourself and dress up in neon to get into the Halloween spirit. #glow4good and complete 8, 16 or 24 km through native bush to a scenic lookout, in the beautiful Colonial Knob /Rangituhi Reserve in Porirua, starting & finishing at Camp Elsdon. This is a fundraising event, a chance for you to truly make a difference for the charity of your choice whilst conquering Colonial Knob 1, 2 or 3 times!!!

Order Your Hoodie Now

From Bertram Manz

We are planning to place another order for hoodies, so this is your chance to get fitted in WHAC colours for the Road Relay Nationals and summer season. Prices still need to be confirmed, but are likely to stay similar to previous orders.

Children’s sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 – about $50 each (add an additional $8 if you want your name printed at the back). Please note that the children’s sizes do not have a draw cord (it’s a health and safety thing).

Adults’ sizes: Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, 2XL, 3XL – about $55 each (add an additional $8 if you want your name printed at the back) – they are a large fit so consider getting a size smaller if you prefer it fitting!!!

If interested, please email your details to Bertram Manz: membership@whac.org.nz
